700+ infrared DNG camera profiles for free

The camera profiles you need to process IR images in Lr and Ps

Processing infrared images with Adobe Camera RAW, implemented in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, faces one major limitation: white balance adjustment. The colour temperature of Adobe Camera RAW is limited to 2000K on its minimum side, where infrared images require lower values to achieve proper white balance on gray chart.

To deal with these issues, I have designed for Kolari Vision a free pack of infrared DNG profiles, optimised for the installation of my infrared LUTs. The combination of these two files will allow you to:

  • Reach the correct white balance for each infrared filter in Adobe Camera RAW and Lr Classic.
  • Perform optimized RGB channel swaps for each infrared filter directly in Adobe Camera RAW and Lr Classic.

In this article, you will learn how to install and combine DNG profiles and infrared LUTs for your camera in both Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, and download more than 700 infrared DNG camera profiles for free!

What is an infrared DNG camera profile?

An infrared DNG camera profile is a camera profile extending the color temperature of the white balance adjustment. As for any camera profile, each infrared DNG profile is dedicated to one camera model. Indeed, a DNG profile is based on the Adobe camera profile corresponding to a specific camera model. If you are using several cameras converted for infrared photography, you will have to install a DNG profile for each of them.

In addition, with infrared DNG profiles come linear infrared DNG profiles. These profiles are working the same as infrared DNG profiles and add a linear tone curve when RAW files are converted. The result is a flatter image where highlights are preserved, requiring a bit more of post-processing but offering you a “rawer” image.

How do I install an infrared DNG camera profile?

An infrared (or linear infrared) DNG camera profile being a camera profile, you can install it the same way as any other camera profile or preset on Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW.

See the Adobe help Center for a complete tutorial about this step: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/kb/faq-install-presets-profiles.html

As explained before, you will have to install infrared DNG profiles corresponding to each one of the converted camera models you are using. This first step is critical to be able to install infrared LUTs in a second time.

Combination of infrared DNG profiles and infrared LUT

In the last part of this article, you will discover the different combinations of infrared DNG profiles and infrared LUTs. I use a ColorChecker Passport from X-Rite to show the impact of each combination in terms of color, saturation, luminosity and contrast.

Benefits of infrared DNG profile

Here are the comparisons of the ColorChecker images shot with different infrared filters – 720nm, 550nm and Candy Chrome filter, without (left image) and with the infrared DNG profile applied (right image). The white balance is set on clear gray square each time. No other adjustment was made.

Benefits of linear infrared DNG profile

Here are the comparisons of the ColorChecker images shot with same infrared filters than previously, without (left image) and with the linear infrared DNG profile applied (right image). The white balance is set on clear gray square each time. No other adjustment was made.

Difference between infrared DNG and linear infrared DNG profiles

Based on the previous results, both infrared and linear infrared DNG profiles are recalibrating the colors to reach a proper white balance. While standard infrared DNG profile is rising luminosity and contrast in addition, linear infrared DNG profile offers a more natural result where luminosity remains the same and contrast is not accentuated.

Depending on the camera model you are using, there may be a difference of 1IL to 11/3IL exposure between the two DNG profiles. With Canon R5C camera, for example, the difference is of 1IL.

From L to R: infrared DNG profile, infrared DNG profile – 1IL exposure, linear infrared DNG profile.

Depending on your subject and personal taste, using an infrared DNG profile will offer you a more luminous and contrasted image, while using a linear infrared DNG profile will offer you a wider dynamic range and better highlights recovery.

To go further

I have built a pack of 12 LUTs dedicated with infrared processing.

These LUTs are optimised to work with Ligthroom Classic and deal with white balance, RGB channel mixer and precise adjustments with this software.

They also work well with other photo and video software.

Through my expertise in infrared photography, I offer a wide range of IR photo and video recording services for your scientific projects and artistic shootings.
